Get the Right Credit Cards
Many travel hackers leverage credit card rewards to earn points and miles. Look for credit cards that offer generous sign-up bonuses and ongoing rewards for travel-related spending. Be sure to understand the terms and fees associated with these cards.
Pop these questions into Google to find the right cards for your travel needs:
- Which credit card issuers offer travel rewards programs, and how can I apply for their cards?
- What are the sign-up bonuses for these credit cards, and what are the requirements to earn them?
- How do I earn points or miles with each credit card, and are there bonus categories for spending?
- What travel-related perks do these credit cards offer, such as travel insurance, airport lounge access, or statement credits?
- What are the redemption options for the points or miles earned through credit cards, and how can I use them for travel-related expenses?
- Do these credit cards have annual fees, and if so, how do they compare to the benefits provided?
- Are there any promotional offers or partnerships between credit card issuers and travel providers that I should be aware of?
Meet Minimum Spending Requirements
Most credit card sign-up bonuses require you to spend a certain amount within the first few months of card ownership. Be sure you can meet these requirements responsibly.
But, above all, be sure you meet the requirements. I applied for and received one travel credit card once and forgot to make sure I spent enough on it during the time period allotted. Because of this oversight, I did not receive all of the bonus miles that the card had promised. This amounted to what would have been enough for a free roundtrip international flight. I still kick myself for failing to do this!
What would I have done differently?
- First, I would have marked a calendar of when I needed to complete the spending requirement on the card. Oftentimes, credit card companies will give you like three months to spend a few thousand dollars. By marking the calendar, I would have known the deadline to reach the goal.
- Second, I would have switched my primary card usage to this particular card. I have a lot of automatic payments for things like utilities, etc. I probably would not have bothered with hassling with changing all of those out--unless I was desperate and found that to be the only way to make my spending requirement in the time allotted.
- Third, I would have purchased ahead for things I needed in the future in order to make the spending requirement. I'm the type of person who pays my credit card off at the end of every month so as to avoid paying interest. So, if I purchased Christmas gifts in June, for instance, I would need to make sure I had the funds to pay for that.
Strategically Accumulate Points and Miles
Use your credit cards for everyday spending to accumulate points and miles. Consider paying bills, groceries, and other regular expenses with your travel rewards card.
I pay for everything with my credit card. I like the convenience of having a consolidated bill at the end of the month for all of my purchases! I generally have a main card I use, and then a supplemental card to use when that primary card isn't accepted. I have accumulated thousands of travel points on these cards over the years just for making purchases I was making anyway.
My preferred credit cards are American Express Delta Sky Miles Platinum Business card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve Visa.😊
Take Advantage of Promotions
Keep an eye out for promotions, bonus offers, and limited-time deals from loyalty programs and credit card issuers. These can help you earn more points and miles quickly.
When I first got my first travel credit card, that card just happened to be having a promotion of three times the miles for any purchases that month. It just so happened that I had a lot of purchases that needed to be made that month and so I really racked up the points!
Keep in mind that sometimes these promotions aren't automatic--meaning you'll have to actually sign up for them on the credit card website. I would recommend perusing the credit card website once a month (when you pay your bill is probably most convenient) and look for promotions. Or see if there is a place to sign up for emails--and then actually read those when they show up in your box! This will help you stay informed on any cool bonuses and promotions that are coming your way.
You can also get bonuses by recommending friends. If you really love a credit card, there's no reason not to recommend it and by doing so, you'll both likely receive bonus miles or points.
Redeem Wisely
Once you've earned a significant amount of points or miles, learn how to maximize their value by redeeming them for premium travel experiences. This might include business or first-class flights, luxury hotel stays, or unique travel opportunities. Check out this related article for even more information!
