Are you planning a trip to the beautiful Bay Area of California? Let's start with the basics. The Bay Area refers to the region surrounding the San Francisco Bay, which encompasses major cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, as well as charming towns in between. The area also includes Silicon Valley, home to the world-renowned Palo Alto and Stanford University.

Whether you're traveling solo or in a group, here are the top seven things you need to know before embarking on your Bay Area adventure. Boost your travel experience with these insider tips!

Discover the Breathtaking Views of the PCH

As a solo or group traveler visiting the Bay Area, driving down the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) is an absolute must-do. Trust me, you won't want to miss out on one of the most breathtaking drives in the world. Start your journey in Half Moon Bay and head south on the PCH as far as you have time for, but keep in mind that you'll need to drive back up north to the Bay Area. For the perfect out-and-back drive, aim to reach the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge, a popular photo spot with a magnificent lookout point. Seriously, just look at this photo. It's not Ireland--it's northern California! This spectacular drive from Half Moon Bay to Bixby Bridge only takes about 2.5 hours without traffic, and it's breathtaking views like this the entire way!

Make sure to stop at the Pie Ranch and the Swanton Berry Farm along the way for some mouth-watering homemade food made from locally-sourced ingredients. Indulge in their famous pies at the Pie Ranch or scrumptious strawberry shortcake at the Swanton Berry Farm - both are not to be missed. Don't forget to snap some photos, but be prepared to share the lookout with a few other selfie takers. Follow these tips and make the most out of your PCH drive during your Bay Area adventure.

Explore the Charms of Palo Alto

As the heart of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Bay Area. While the city may be bustling with movers and shakers in the digital world, it maintains a quaint small-town feel that you'll fall in love with. If you're lucky enough to stay in one of the cozy vacation rental homes in Palo Alto, you'll experience the city's charm firsthand. Keep in mind that these rental homes come with a hefty price tag due to the high demand. Even well-paid tech employees at companies like Google and Facebook struggle to afford these coveted abodes.

While in Palo Alto, take a stroll through the neighborhoods where famous tech icons like Steve Jobs once lived, or still do live. You can use this link for more information on these iconic homes. Additionally, University Avenue is a great place to walk around and explore, with its delicious restaurants and boutique clothing stores. However, finding parking can be a challenge, so consider parking on a side street or opting for a carless day and walking or taking an Uber. Don't miss out on the opportunity to explore the charming and iconic city of Palo Alto while visiting the Bay Area. Drive Over the Iconic Golden Gate Bridge

A trip to the Bay Area is not complete without driving across the famous Golden Gate Bridge. While it will cost you a toll of around $13, the breathtaking views of the bridge and the city of San Francisco in the background make it totally worth it. Once you've driven across, stop at one of the viewing areas to your right to capture some amazing photos. It's the perfect free souvenir of your bridge adventure!

Pro Tip: The bridge does not have a toll booth, but instead cameras that take photos of the cars that cross from Sausalito to San Francisco. If you have a rental car, find out ahead of time from the rental car company if the toll will just be billed directly to them, or if you need to pay for it online yourself. You do not want to end up with a fine from the rental car company for an unpaid toll.

Keep in mind, you don't have to drive to cross the bridge. You could take a city bus or the Hop-on-Hop-off Bus if you prefer. Or if you're feeling active, you can even bike or walk across. Just be sure to dress warm in a windbreaker, even in the summer months, as the wind off the bay can be chilly.

Once you've crossed the bridge, head to the delightful seaside town of Sausalito, just a short drive away. With delicious ice cream shops, restaurants, and touristy gift shops, it's worth spending a few hours here. Be aware that break-ins are common, especially in cars that look like rental cars, so park in a paid parking lot in the center of town and don't leave any valuables in your car.

Driving over the Golden Gate Bridge is a must-do activity for any Bay Area visitor, so don't miss it!

Don't Miss Out on Muir Woods

I had been to the Bay Area several times before I made the effort to journey to Muir Woods. Wow. What a mistake. I should have gone the very first time. Muir Woods is a must-visit destination in the Bay Area. In this little enclave you get to stroll through a forest of giants—the coastal redwoods—where you quite literally must crane your neck to see all the way to the top. These magnificent trees are a sight to behold and walking among them is an unforgettable experience. It’s a shame to think that most of northern California was once covered in these majestic trees, and now they’re only left in a few locations. But thank goodness we had the good sense to at least leave what we did. Keep in mind that the oldest giants in Muir Woods are over 1,200 years old!

An unusual aspect of Muir Woods is that you must schedule your parking reservation in advance. Without a parking reservation, you cannot go to the park, even if you have tickets, or they have tickets available! Get your parking reservation here.

Pro tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy the serenity of the forest. Consider taking a guided tour to learn more about the history and ecology of the park. Muir Woods is an excellent destination for hikers of all levels, with trails ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes.

Ride the Cable Cars

Did you know that the San Francisco Cable Cars are one of the only moving National Historic Landmarks in the United States? So, it’s kind of a no-brainer that on a visit to the Bay Area you should ride them. Not only are they a piece of living history, they are also a fun, convenient (and necessary) way to get around the city.

Checkout this video that explains all about the cable cars! Click the picture below.

The cable cars were first introduced in the late 19th century as a way to help people navigate the hilly streets of San Francisco. Today, they are still an integral part of the city's transportation system and a beloved symbol of the city. You'll see immediately upon stepping foot in the city of San Francisco where many of the roads go straight up a hill. You do not want to walk those hills! Let me repeat. You do not want to walk those hills. That’s what the cable cars are for, after all. They will chug you up the steep inclines of San Francisco and let you sightsee without so much as a huff or a puff.

There are three cable car lines in operation: the Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, and California Street lines. Each line offers its own unique views and experiences. The Powell-Hyde line is the most popular, as it takes you up and down steep hills and offers stunning views of the bay and Alcatraz Island. The Powell-Mason line also offers great views and stops at some popular tourist destinations, like Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square. The California Street line is less crowded and offers a more laid-back experience.

Tickets must be purchased in advance, and you can do so at the cable car turnaround at Powell and Market Streets, or online at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) website. Keep in mind that lines can be long, especially during peak tourist season, so it's a good idea to plan ahead and arrive early.

Ferry out to Alcatraz, the Infamous Island Prison of the Bay Area

Alcatraz Island, one of the most famous former prisons in the world, is a must-visit destination when in the Bay Area. Located in the San Francisco Bay, it housed some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including gangster Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud “the Birdman of Alcatraz.” The frigid waters of the bay kept most prisoners from escaping, but 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. All were caught or didn’t survive, except three men who attempted an escape in 1963 - Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin, and John Anglin. No one knows what happened to them. Did they make it to freedom? Did they die in the icy waters? Their fate remains an unsolved mystery—and it’s stories like this that add to the mystique of the place. Check out the story here.

Check out this video to see what it was like to be a prisoner at Alcatraz.

I’m not going to lie, it’s a spooky place. The audio tour definitely adds to the creepiness, too. Visitors can take an audio tour of the prison, which adds to the eeriness, but also provides some important historical information too so you can understand what you’re looking on the tour. For a truly hair-raising experience, book a night tour and explore the dark buildings with only dangling lightbulbs as your guide. Although in the past, they allowed overnight stays, it's unclear if this is still an option since the pandemic of 2020.

To plan your visit, make sure to book tour tickets in advance through the National Park Service's official website. If you're interested in learning more about the history of Alcatraz, check out this informative article by History.com.

Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a unique and eerie experience, a visit to Alcatraz Island is an unforgettable experience that you won't want to miss.

Don’t Miss the Cities by the Bay
