Staying at Munich's Wombat's City Hostel Hauptbahnhof: A 5-Star Experience

Table of Contents

I stayed at the Wombat’s City Hostel Munich Hauptbahnhof in December 2022. I found there to be a combination of pros and cons at this location, which of course is the case with most accommodations. The cons weren't too significant; however, because I still give this location a high rating and would definitely stay here again on a return trip to Munich. Here are my pros and cons.

Pros

Location

You honestly cannot beat the location of this hostel. It is across the street from the Hauptbahnhof, just like the name suggests and as a backpacker, that makes life SO easy. I also liked the fact that it wasn’t too far walking distance from the top sites in the city. I took a self-guided Rick Steves' audio walking tour (you can download the free app on your phone by clicking this link on Rick Steves' website.) and I literally started out from the hostel and walked to the first location, which wasn’t very far at all. There are a bunch of grocery stores and restaurants near the hostel, too, which made things very convenient.

Cool Factor

I really liked the layout of this hostel. There’s an enormous atrium area that is used as a lounge and dining area. The atrium was so inviting and I found myself relaxing or working here often. On one side of the atrium is the reception area (which also has some lounge and work spaces) and on the other side is the hostel’s bar that comes equipped with lots of lounge space and a billiard table. The kitchen was one of my favorite parts of this hostel. It had a big island bar where people could make food or eat, full kitchen facilities (stovetop and microwave) and plenty of space in two refrigerators and multiple dry-goods shelves for storage. There was free pasta, free coffee, and free tea for guests to help themselves to whatever they wanted.

Cleanliness

The hostel was super clean. I had zero issues with my bed, my room, the en-suite bathroom, or the common area's cleanliness. I stayed in a mixed eight-person room and it was perfectly lovely.

Safety

The hostel is totally safe. The only way you can get into the common areas or the rooms is if you have an electronic key. You could potentially hang out in the reception area without being a guest, but that wouldn’t last long if you didn’t belong there. I witnessed this for myself. I was sitting in reception working one night (because it was the best place to get wifi) and an older man was sitting in there also not too far from me. He was kind of lounging and half-sleeping. It didn’t take long for reception to come and ask him if he was a guest and if so, to show his key card. He wasn’t a guest, so he was asked to leave. In addition to the common space security, each floor has a lock that can only be accessed with a room key from that floor and, of course, each room has a lock that can only be accessed by the people in that room. The lockers could also be unlocked with your key card as well so you didn’t need your own lock on the latch.

Cons

The only thing I didn’t really like about the hostel was the en-suite bathrooms. I am not a big fan of these types of bathrooms for several reasons. For one, they can be disruptive if people need to use the bathroom throughout the night. Also, I would much rather prefer having access to multiple showers and toilets down the hall rather than one shower and one toilet in the room that has to be shared with eight people. However, this is just a personal preference because I know that plenty of people like the en-suite bathrooms instead of the shared bathrooms on each floor.

I will say that an advantage of this hostel is that they did have separate toilets for men and women on each floor, which certainly made it nice if someone was in your en-suite bathroom when you needed to use it.

Five Stars

Overall, I give this hostel a 5 out of 5. I would still stay here on another visit to Munich, even though I wasn’t a fan of the en-suite bathrooms. That wasn’t enough of issue to make me want to find another location.
