Are you dreaming of a serene and picturesque escape to the Swiss Alps that is away from the typical tourist crowds? Then, the enchanting alpine village of St. Gallen in northeastern Switzerland definitely needs to be included on your itinerary. This little locale—just an hour from Zurich on the train—is filled with hidden gems ranging from historical edifices, chocolatey treats, charming Christmas markets, and a beautiful mountain landscape that are just waiting to be explored, sampled, and photographed.
The Abbey of St. Gall Library: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Abbey of St. Gall’s library is a must see on any visit to St. Gallen. In fact, the library alone is enough to encourage you to include St. Gallen on your itinerary. It was a major reason why I decided to visit during a Christmas Market research tour in 2022. I used to work at a special collections library while in college, so this kind of place is right up my alley.
The Abbey of St. Gall library is the oldest library in all of Switzerland and one of the most important libraries in all of Europe. The collection was started by the Benedictine monastery in the early 9th century. It currently has over 160,000 books in the collection. Many of the tomes and manuscripts are rare, and are found nowhere else in the world. The most famous manuscript at the library is the St. Gall Gospel Book. It’s an illuminated manuscript that dates back to the 8th century and contains the four gospels of the New Testament. An illuminated manuscript is one that is painfully scribed by hand and then artistically illustrated (or illuminated) with colored ink and gold leaf as a way to describe the content of the page for those who could not read. Click here to read more about these beautiful medieval texts.
The main room of the “Old Library” is spectacular, and definitely the showstopper on a tour of the library complex. It was built in the late 18th century with Swiss pine wood paneling on the floor, bookshelves, and flooring. This helps to insulate the room and protect the books from shifts in temperature and humidity. In order to protect the floor (and the books from the damage that extra dust can cause), visitors are required to wear these nifty wool shoe coverings when they enter the room.
Note: The free guided tours offered in the Old Library are only given in German. So, be sure to pay extra when you buy your ticket so you can get the audio tour, which is offered in a variety of languages. The audio tour not only includes the library complex, but also the old town of St. Gallen—so it’s actually really worth the money.
Besides books, the library also has an Egyptian sarcophagus, a huge globe that shows what the medieval people of Europe believed the world looked like, and a variety of display cases which showcase revolving exhibits of the library’s book and manuscript collection.
Dipping into a Cup of Swiss Hot Chocolate
Across the street from the Abby is the delightful little café Chocolaterie Kölbener am Klosterplatz. They have to-go and dine-in options, but definitely stay to get the full experience. They have a wide variety of hot chocolates to choose from and delicious pastries.
The day I visited, I was cozied up at a table with a bunch of other customers since it was a busy time in the afternoon. I had already scoped out what I wanted from the pastry display case en route to my seat, so all I had to do was choose my hot chocolate flavor. I opted for one of their holiday special flavors. The servers spoke both German and English, so navigating through the menu options and placing the order was not a problem.
I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the delicious sweet treats at Chocolaterie Kölbener am Klosterplatz and would definitely come here again on a future trip to St. Gallen. It was a delightful way to unwind after a long afternoon exploring this cute mountain town.
Explore the Charming Christmas Market
The Christmas market in St. Gallen generally opens up the end of November every year and stays open every day until December 24. The main part of the market is set up at Waaghaus, Bohl, and Marktgasse; however, the entire town twinkles with sparkly decorations draped between the colorful half-timbered buildings lining the cobblestone streets. It's truly a photographer's dream.
Of course—as in every Christmas Market in Europe—there are both food, drink and gift options abounding at the more than 70 stalls at the St. Gallen market. Try out the mulled wine (glühwein) or opt for the kinder wine (warmed apple juice) if you're a non-alcoholic drinker. Note, that as is the case in every European market, you pay a "rental" fee for the glass mug on top of the cost of the drink. When you return it, you get your money back. Of, if you'd like to keep the mug for a souvenir, you can opt to do that and just forego the rental fee. In addition to the hot drinks, be sure to try some Swiss raclette—a yummy melted cheese dish that is generally served with potatoes—that is a perfect way to warm up on a cold winter's night at the markets!
